Lahore High Court Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani has resigned from his position, citing personal reasons, health issues and what he described as the call of his conscience, according to the text of his resignation.

In his resignation, Justice Kayani said the 26th and 27th constitutional amendments had affected the independence and institutional autonomy of high courts.

He said the growing control of the executive over judicial institutions was detrimental to judicial independence, adding that interference in the appointment and transfer of judges had undermined public confidence in the judicial system.

Justice Kayani said ordinary litigants were fundamental stakeholders in the justice system, but their difficulties continued to be overlooked.

“The needs of those seeking justice are being ignored, while other elements associated with the system are benefiting,” the resignation stated.

He said loyalty to the Constitution, judicial independence and the protection of human dignity were fundamental requirements of judicial office.

Justice Kayani also announced that he would resume practising law after resigning as a judge.

He said he would continue working to protect people’s rights and promote legal awareness through his legal practice.

A copy of his resignation was also sent to the registrar of the Lahore High Court.
