Afghan Taliban forces opened unprovoked fire on Pakistani border posts along the Pakistan-Afghanistan frontier in South Waziristan, prompting an immediate and effective response from Pakistan’s security forces, according to the district administration.
The latest incident comes amid continuing tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan following repeated border clashes, ceasefire violations and unsuccessful efforts to achieve a lasting resolution through diplomatic negotiations.
According to the Deputy Commissioner of South Waziristan, Pakistani security forces responded swiftly to the firing from the Afghan side, targeting multiple Afghan border posts, mortar positions and defensive installations.
The Deputy Commissioner said Afghan Taliban personnel abandoned their positions and fled following the strong retaliatory action by Pakistani forces.
No casualties were reported on the Pakistani side of the border.

Pakistan-Afghanistan Border Tensions Continue
The latest exchange of fire is part of an ongoing security confrontation between Pakistan and Afghanistan, which has witnessed repeated border violations and armed clashes.
Tensions escalated significantly in October 2025 when Afghan Taliban forces launched attacks on Pakistani border positions, triggering retaliatory action by Pakistan’s armed forces.
The confrontation led to diplomatic efforts aimed at preventing further escalation, including rounds of negotiations between Pakistan and Afghanistan in Doha, Qatar, and Istanbul, Türkiye.
The talks focused on border security, cross-border terrorism and measures to prevent further hostilities. However, the two sides failed to establish a lasting mechanism to address their security differences.
Despite diplomatic engagement, tensions resurfaced on the night of February 26, 2026, when Afghan Taliban forces again attacked Pakistani military positions along the border, prompting another response from Pakistan’s security forces.
The February confrontation further strained relations between Islamabad and Kabul, highlighting the fragility of security arrangements along the shared border.
Cross-Border Terrorism Remains a Major Concern
Pakistan has repeatedly raised concerns over the presence of terrorist organisations operating from Afghan territory, particularly Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), designated by Pakistan as Fitna al-Khawarij, and the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), referred to as Fitna al-Hindustan.
Islamabad has maintained that terrorist groups operating from Afghan soil pose a serious threat to Pakistan’s national security and has demanded that the Afghan Taliban authorities take concrete action against these networks.
Pakistan has also repeatedly emphasised its right to defend its territory and citizens against cross-border attacks and terrorist threats.
Latest Incident Highlights Persistent Border Instability
The latest firing incident in South Waziristan demonstrates that tensions along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border remain unresolved despite previous diplomatic engagements and security-level contacts.
According to the Deputy Commissioner of South Waziristan, Pakistani security forces remain prepared to respond to any further aggression.
The latest confrontation once again highlights the challenges facing Islamabad and Kabul in restoring stability along their shared border.
