Six Killed in Helicopter Crash Near Badrinath in India’s Uttarakhand
According to Uttarakhand state police, the helicopter was carrying five passengers and a pilot when it crashed near a valley in Joshimath, a mountainous area in the Indian Himalayas.
At least six people were killed when a helicopter travelling from the Hindu pilgrimage town of Badrinath crashed in India’s northern Uttarakhand state on Friday, police officials confirmed.
According to Uttarakhand state police, the helicopter was carrying five passengers and a pilot when it crashed near a valley in Joshimath, a mountainous area in the Indian Himalayas.
All six people on board died in the crash.
Rescue Teams Struggle to Recover Bodies
Police said rescue and recovery operations were underway at the remote crash site, where difficult mountainous terrain was complicating efforts to retrieve the victims’ bodies.
“Efforts are currently underway to transport the bodies from the inaccessible crash site to the nearest road,” police said in a statement.
Authorities have not yet established the cause of the crash, and no official explanation has been provided regarding the circumstances leading to the incident.
Heavy Rainfall Forecast for Uttarakhand
The helicopter crash occurred as India’s weather department had forecast widespread rainfall across Uttarakhand on Friday.
The weather warning came two days after Cyclone Arnab made landfall along India’s southeastern coast.
However, authorities have not confirmed whether weather conditions contributed to the helicopter crash.
Badrinath Among India’s Major Hindu Pilgrimage Destinations
Uttarakhand is home to several important Hindu pilgrimage sites, including Badrinath and Kedarnath, which attract millions of devotees each year.
Badrinath is known for its ancient temple dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnu and is located in the Himalayan mountains.
Private helicopter operators provide charter services to pilgrims travelling to remote mountain shrines, allowing passengers to avoid lengthy and physically demanding treks.
The services are particularly popular among pilgrims seeking faster access to religious destinations in the mountainous region.
Previous Helicopter Crashes Raise Safety Concerns
The latest incident follows previous aviation disasters involving pilgrimage routes in Uttarakhand.
In June 2025, at least seven pilgrims were killed when a helicopter crashed near Kedarnath, another major Hindu pilgrimage destination in the state.
The same month, a passenger aircraft crashed into a residential area in Ahmedabad, western India, killing 260 people.
Friday’s helicopter crash has once again drawn attention to aviation safety challenges in India’s mountainous regions, where difficult terrain and unpredictable weather can complicate flight operations.
Authorities have yet to announce the cause of the latest crash.
