Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu will visit Pakistan next week to strengthen bilateral ties, the Foreign Office said on Sunday.

In a post on X, the Foreign Office said talks with the Pakistani leadership during the visit were expected to place particular emphasis on trade, investment and economic cooperation.

President Muizzu will undertake a state visit to Pakistan from October 20 to 22 at the invitation of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

He will be accompanied by Maldives First Lady Sajidha Mohamed and a high-level delegation comprising cabinet ministers and senior officials.

“President Mohamed Muizzu will hold talks with Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif in a restricted format as well as at the delegation level,” the Foreign Office said in a statement.

“The two leaders will review all aspects of bilateral relations and explore avenues to further strengthen cooperation in trade, investment, health, education, tourism, agriculture, defence, maritime security, climate change and people-to-people contacts,” it added.

The two sides will also exchange views on regional and international developments of mutual interest.

According to the Foreign Office, the visit will feature the Pakistan-Maldives Business Forum, aimed at promoting links between the business communities of the two countries and exploring new opportunities for trade and investment.

Several agreements and memorandums of understanding (MoUs) covering different areas of bilateral cooperation are also expected to be signed during the visit.

The Foreign Office said the visit would be the first by a Maldivian president to Pakistan in 11 years.

The visit holds particular significance as the two countries are marking the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations, which began in July 1966.

Pakistan and the Maldives have maintained longstanding diplomatic ties based on Islamic solidarity and their shared participation in regional and international forums, including the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (Saarc).

“The visit reflects the shared commitment of the two countries to further strengthen their bilateral partnership and open new avenues of mutually beneficial cooperation,” the Foreign Office said.
