Brazil’s left-wing leader Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has secured a historic fourth presidential term after defeating right-wing rival Jair Bolsonaro in the second round of the country’s presidential election.

According to the reported election results, Lula received 51.75 percent of the vote, while Bolsonaro secured 48.25 percent, marking a closely contested presidential race.

Voting took place on Sunday, with Brazil’s Supreme Court ordering an unusual two-hour extension to polling hours due to travel and transportation difficulties affecting voters.

Following the court’s decision, polling stations remained open until 7 p.m., allowing additional time for voters to cast their ballots.

Lula, one of Brazil’s most prominent left-wing political figures, previously served two consecutive presidential terms from 2003 to 2011 before returning to power for a third term in 2023.

With his latest electoral victory, Lula has reportedly become the first leader in Brazil’s history to be elected president four times.

The election marks another significant chapter in Brazil’s political landscape, with Lula securing a fresh mandate following a closely fought contest against Bolsonaro.
