US President Donald Trump has dismissed White House Press Secretary Katie Zacharia after just one week in office, following a difficult debut briefing and growing scrutiny over her professional background, CNN reported.

According to CNN, advisers to President Trump confirmed that Zacharia was leaving her position after a turbulent week as the White House’s top spokesperson.

Her departure follows a shaky first appearance in the White House briefing room on Tuesday, when she appeared visibly nervous and struggled to handle journalists’ questions with confidence.

Her performance, along with persistent questions about her professional background, attracted considerable media attention and scrutiny from fellow Trump aides.

Earlier on Friday, Trump told reporters that he had advised Zacharia to reconsider her role.

“Honestly, if I were you, I’d reconsider,” Trump said, recalling his conversation with Zacharia that morning.

“Katie, do you need this? I don’t think you need this,” the president added.

Trump initially suggested that the final decision would be left to Zacharia and said they would speak again when he returned to the White House.

However, a White House official subsequently told CNN that Zacharia was “transitioning out” of the press secretary role, while a Trump adviser said she would leave the White House within the next few days.

Despite the decision, Trump defended Zacharia while departing for a political rally in Georgia, saying she had been mistreated by the media and praising her loyalty.

Her departure after just one week marks an unusually brief tenure for a White House press secretary, a position responsible for communicating the administration’s policies and handling questions from the national and international media.
