Trump to Accept US Midterm Results as Democrats Lead Early Counts
Reacting to the early results, Trump said he would accept the election outcome while arguing that Republicans would have performed significantly better had he been on the ballot.
US President Donald Trump has said he will accept the results of the 2026 midterm elections as early counts indicate Democrats are leading Republicans in the race for control of Congress.
Vote counting is continuing across the United States following the midterm elections, with preliminary figures suggesting Democratic candidates have gained an advantage in both the House of Representatives and the Senate.
Reacting to the early results, Trump said he would accept the election outcome while arguing that Republicans would have performed significantly better had he been on the ballot.
“I wasn’t on the ballot. If I had been, we would have won by a landslide,” Trump said.
The US president also expressed willingness to work with Democrats on certain legislative issues, suggesting that both parties could find common ground despite their political differences.
Trump specifically mentioned immigration as an area where cooperation with Democrats could be possible.
However, he warned that he would use his presidential veto power against legislation he considered unacceptable.
“If Democrats send me stupid things, I will veto them,” Trump said.
The president also indicated that he was not considering changes to his Cabinet following the election results.
According to the preliminary figures cited in the reports, Democratic candidates were leading in 190 House races, compared with 110 for Republicans.
The US House of Representatives has 435 seats, with a party requiring at least 218 seats to secure a majority.
In the Senate, the reported early figures placed Democrats at 51 seats after leads in 17 contests, while Republicans were reported to have 39 seats following leads in eight races.
The Senate consists of 100 members, with 51 seats generally required for a simple majority.
The reported results remain preliminary, with vote counting continuing and the final balance of power in Congress yet to be confirmed.
The midterm elections will determine control of Congress and could significantly influence Trump’s ability to advance his legislative agenda during the remainder of his presidency.
