An air ambulance carrying six people has crashed into the Atlantic Ocean while flying from Bermuda to Boston, with authorities confirming that wreckage recovered near Nantucket belongs to the missing medical jet.

The Gulfstream G100 medical jet was travelling from Bermuda to Boston, Massachusetts, when contact with the aircraft was lost near the island of Nantucket.

Six people were on board, including four Canadian crew members, a patient and the patient’s attendant. Authorities have so far not officially confirmed that any of those on board have been found or survived the crash.

According to officials, the aircraft departed Bermuda airport for Boston at 12:41 am and lost contact near Nantucket at around 1:20 am on Saturday.

The US Coast Guard later confirmed that debris recovered from the sea off Nantucket belonged to the missing aircraft.

A large-scale search and rescue operation involving US Coast Guard helicopters, aircraft and boats continued in the Atlantic late into the night as teams searched for those on board.

Officials said the aircraft descended around 9,000 feet in just two minutes shortly before disappearing. Its position briefly stabilised before it vanished from radar.

The pilot had also declared an emergency before the crash, according to officials.

The scattered wreckage indicated that the aircraft struck the ocean at very high speed.

Search and rescue efforts remain underway for the six people who were aboard the medical jet.
