PMD forecasts rain, thunderstorms across country from Sept 12

According to the Met Office, monsoon currents are penetrating the upper parts of the country, while a westerly wave is likely to enter the upper parts during the weekend and strengthen on September 14.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast rain-wind and thundershowers in several parts of the country from September 12 to 17, with temperatures likely to drop during the period.

According to the Met Office, monsoon currents are penetrating the upper parts of the country, while a westerly wave is likely to enter the upper parts during the weekend and strengthen on September 14.

Under the influence of the weather system, rain-wind and thundershowers with isolated heavy rainfall and hailstorms are expected in Kashmir from September 12 to 17, with occasional gaps.

The affected areas include Neelum Valley, Muzaffarabad, Rawalakot, Poonch, Hattian, Bagh, Haveli, Sudhanoti, Kotli, Bhimber and Mirpur.

In Islamabad and Punjab, rain-wind and thundershowers with isolated heavy rainfall and hailstorms are expected in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Murree, Galliyat, Jhelum, Chakwal, Talagang and Attock from September 12 to 17, with occasional gaps.

The same weather conditions are expected in Lahore, Sialkot, Sheikhupura, Narowal, Mandi Bahauddin, Gujrat, Gujranwala, Wazirabad, Hafizabad, Kasur, Okara, Nankana Sahib, Sargodha, Khushab, Mianwali, Noorpur Thal, Faisalabad, Jhang, Toba Tek Singh, Layyah, Bhakkar, Sahiwal, Dera Ghazi Khan, Multan and surrounding areas from the evening/night of September 14 to September 17, with occasional gaps.

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, rain-wind and thundershowers with isolated heavy rainfall and hailstorms are expected in Peshawar, Dir, Chitral, Swat, Kohistan, Malakand, Mardan, Nowshera, Charsadda, Swabi, Shangla, Battagram, Buner, Kohat, Hangu, Kurram, Bajaur, Mohmand, Khyber, Orakzai, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Haripur, Karak, Tank, Lakki Marwat, D.I Khan, Bannu and Waziristan from September 12 to 17, with occasional gaps.

Gilgit-Baltistan is also expected to receive rain-wind and thundershowers with moderate to isolated heavy rainfall in Diamir, Astore, Ghizer, Skardu, Hunza, Gilgit, Ghanche and Shigar from September 12 to 17, with occasional gaps.

In Sindh, mainly hot and humid weather is likely to prevail in most parts. However, rain-wind and thunderstorms with isolated heavy rainfall are expected in Sukkur, Larkana, Jacobabad, Mirpurkhas, Tharparkar, Umarkot, Thatta, Badin, Karachi and surrounding areas from the evening/night of September 13 to September 16, with occasional gaps.

Mainly hot and humid weather is also expected to prevail in most parts of Balochistan during the forecast period. However, rain-wind and thunderstorms are expected in Zhob, Barkhan, Musakhel and surrounding areas from the evening/night of September 13 to September 16, with occasional gaps.

Possible impacts

The Met Office warned that heavy rains may cause urban flooding in low-lying areas of Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Mardan, Swabi, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Sialkot, Faisalabad and Lahore from September 14 to 17.

It said heavy rain may also cause flash floods in local streams and nullahs in Dir, Chitral, Swat, Kohistan, Shangla, Battagram, Buner, Malakand, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Gilgit-Baltistan, Kashmir, Murree, Galliyat, Islamabad and Rawalpindi during the same period.

Landslides may occur in hilly areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, Murree, Galliyat and Kashmir during the forecast period.

The Met Office said temperatures were likely to drop during the period.

Tourists and travellers have been advised to remain cautious, while farmers have been advised to manage their crop activities keeping in view the weather conditions.

All concerned authorities have been advised to remain ‘ALERT’ and take necessary measures to avoid any untoward situation during the forecast period.
