Pakistan and the Maldives exchanged memorandums of understanding (MoUs) in several sectors, including defence, on Wednesday during Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu’s visit to Pakistan.

The visit is the first official trip by a Maldivian president to Pakistan in 11 years.

President Muizzu arrived in Islamabad on October 20 and held meetings with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar on Wednesday.

Following the meetings, the two countries exchanged several MoUs in the presence of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and President Muizzu.

The agreements cover multiple areas, including defence, social protection, recruitment of medical professionals and maritime security.

Earlier on Wednesday, Pakistan and the Maldives also held discussions on strengthening cooperation to combat human trafficking, illegal migration and organised crime.

Pakistan’s Ministry of Interior said the two South Asian countries were seeking to expand their security ties.

President Muizzu will remain in Pakistan until October 22. His visit coincides with the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries in July 1966.

Separately, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar also met President Muizzu and reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to its longstanding brotherly relations with the Maldives.

Dar emphasised the importance of expanding bilateral cooperation in various fields, including trade, investment, education, climate change and tourism.

According to the Foreign Office, Dar welcomed the participation of a Maldivian business delegation in the Pakistan-Maldives Business Forum and expressed hope that engagement between businesses would create concrete opportunities for trade and investment.
