Prominent Iranian actress Elnaz Shakerdoost has been sentenced to one year in prison over her support for protesters killed during a crackdown on anti-government demonstrations in Iran in January.

According to the US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), Shakerdoost’s appeal against the sentence has also been rejected.

The sentence includes a two-year ban on online activities, according to reports cited by the French news agency AFP.

Shakerdoost, one of Iran’s well-known film actresses, has appeared in dozens of Iranian films during a career spanning more than two decades.

In February, the actress announced that she would never act in Iran again following the crackdown on nationwide protests in which thousands of people were killed.

A friend of Shakerdoost based in Paris told AFP that the actress was not currently in prison. However, the friend did not confirm whether Shakerdoost was presently inside Iran.

The sentencing comes amid continued scrutiny of the Iranian authorities’ response to anti-government protests and action against public figures who have expressed support for demonstrators.
