At least 20 Palestinians, including five children, have been killed and 14 others injured after a war-damaged seven-storey residential building collapsed overnight in Gaza City, according to the Palestinian Civil Defence.

Rescue teams searched through the rubble for survivors after the building collapsed, with residents joining emergency crews and using their hands to dig through the debris.

Local media reported that the residential building had previously been damaged in an Israeli bombing, leaving the structure cracked and weakened before its eventual collapse.

According to witnesses and verified footage, children could be heard crying for help from beneath the wreckage as Civil Defence teams worked to reach those trapped inside.

The collapse initially left at least 16 Palestinians dead, including women and children, before the death toll rose to 20, the Civil Defence said on Wednesday.

Rescue operations continued as emergency workers and residents searched for survivors beneath the remains of the building.
