US President Donald Trump has confirmed that American and Iranian officials held a three-hour meeting in New York on Tuesday on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, with senior members of his team meeting Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.

Trump said his special envoy Steve Witkoff and son-in-law Jared Kushner were part of the US delegation that met Iranian officials at the United Nations.

The US president described the talks as positive, saying the meeting “went well” and that it was in Iran’s interest to reach a deal.

Witkoff, Kushner Meet Araghchi

According to a US official, Witkoff and Kushner met Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi during the talks in New York.

The meeting lasted around three hours, according to Trump, who confirmed that US and Iranian officials held discussions on Tuesday during the UN General Assembly session.

Meeting Held at US Request, Iranian Media Says

Iranian media reported that the meeting took place at the request of the United States. According to the reports, the discussions were also aimed at presenting Iran’s conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran’s reported conditions include lifting the blockade on Iran, releasing Iranian assets and ending the war on all fronts. The meeting comes amid heightened attention on US-Iran relations and the Strait of Hormuz, a strategically important waterway for global energy supplies.

US-Iran relations have remained strained since February 2026, despite intermittent diplomatic efforts to ease tensions. Islamabad hosted talks between the two sides earlier in the year, followed by negotiations in Geneva, where the parties signed the Islamabad Memorandum. However, tensions persisted over Iran’s nuclear programme, regional security and the Strait of Hormuz. Earlier in his address to the UN General Assembly, Trump warned Iran that he would either help make it “a great nation” or “annihilate” it. The latest three-hour meeting between US and Iranian officials in New York marks another round of diplomatic engagement between Washington and Tehran.
