WASHINGTON/KYIV: US negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are set to visit Russia and Ukraine this weekend as diplomatic efforts to end the war appear to be gaining momentum.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that he will meet the US envoys on Sunday, following their planned visit to Moscow on Saturday, where they are expected to hold talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Witkoff and Kushner, who have been leading US President Donald Trump’s efforts to broker a peace agreement, are carrying a proposal aimed at ending the conflict. However, significant differences remain between Moscow and Kyiv.
“They are bringing with them a proposal to end the war,” Trump told reporters when asked about the upcoming diplomatic visits.
Meanwhile, Zelensky said earlier Friday that a Russian drone struck the Kyiv office of Oleksandr Poklad, head of Ukraine’s SBU security service. Poklad was reportedly unharmed in the incident.
Zelensky said he had instructed Poklad to respond “adequately” to the attack.
Witkoff and Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law, have previously traveled to Russia several times as part of Washington’s diplomatic efforts. Their upcoming visit to Ukraine would mark their first such trip to the country.
Zelensky also said Ukraine would guarantee the safety of Russian airspace during the US envoys’ visit and called on Moscow to provide reciprocal assurances for Ukrainian airspace.
The back-to-back visits come as Washington intensifies diplomatic efforts to bridge the differences between Russia and Ukraine and push the two sides toward a potential peace agreement.
