UN Secretary-General António Guterres Arrives in Islamabad for Three-Day Visit
Guterres is serving his second and final term as United Nations Secretary-General, which ends on December 31, 2026.
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres arrived in Pakistan on October 6 for a three-day official visit, during which he will meet the country’s top political and military leadership and visit the headquarters of the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP).
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Guterres will undertake the official visit from October 6 to 8 at the invitation of Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar.
During his stay, the UN Secretary-General will hold meetings with President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, and the Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff.
Guterres will also visit the headquarters of UNMOGIP and attend a briefing at Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).
The Foreign Office said the Secretary-General will have other engagements during his visit, where Pakistan’s efforts towards strengthening multilateralism and international peace and security, as well as the country’s progress in disaster preparedness and early warning, will be highlighted.
The visit will provide an important opportunity for Pakistan to reiterate its longstanding cooperation with the United Nations and exchange views with the UN chief on key regional and international developments.
According to the Foreign Office, the visit will also provide an opportunity to acknowledge Guterres’ leadership and contributions in the areas of international peace and development.
“The forthcoming visit reflects Pakistan’s unwavering support for multilateralism with UN at its core, and its abiding commitment to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter,” the Foreign Office said.
Guterres is currently serving his second and final term as United Nations Secretary-General, which ends on December 31, 2026. His visit comes during the final months of his tenure at the helm of the world body.
Guterres last visited Pakistan in September 2022 in the aftermath of the devastating floods that affected millions of people across the country. During that visit, he met Pakistan’s leadership and toured flood-hit areas, calling for greater international support to help the country respond to the disaster and rebuild affected communities.
