Saudi Arabia has reaffirmed that adherence to international law and the UN Charter is a fundamental pillar for maintaining international peace and security and protecting civilians in armed conflicts.

The Kingdom made the remarks in a statement delivered by its Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Dr. Abdulaziz Alwasil, during a UN Security Council meeting on Wednesday on upholding international law in situations of armed conflict.

Alwasil stressed the need to protect civilians, civilian objects, and humanitarian and medical personnel, while respecting the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of states and refraining from interference in their internal affairs.

He underscored the importance of applying international law without selectivity or double standards and strengthening accountability for violations, saying such measures help reinforce respect for international rules and principles.

The Saudi envoy also called for prioritising dialogue and peaceful means, supporting mediation efforts to address and resolve conflicts, and mitigating their humanitarian and security repercussions.

Alwasil reiterated Saudi Arabia’s commitment to promoting respect for international humanitarian law and the protection of civilians, as well as supporting international efforts aimed at achieving security and stability and resolving conflicts through peaceful means.
