Meta has introduced a new safety feature for Facebook that will notify parents when teenagers repeatedly search for content related to suicide or self-harm, expanding parental supervision tools already available on Instagram.

According to a blog post published by Meta, the feature is designed to help parents identify potential warning signs and provide support when their children engage with potentially harmful content on the social media platform.

The alerts will be available to parents who have enabled supervision of their teenagers’ Facebook accounts.

How Facebook’s New Parental Alerts Will Work

Under the new system, Facebook will notify parents when a teenager repeatedly searches for suicide or self-harm-related content within a short period.

Meta said the notifications are intended to alert parents to potentially concerning behaviour rather than provide details about every search.

The company has not disclosed the exact number of searches or the timeframe required to trigger an alert.

The feature is already available on Instagram and is now being extended to Facebook as part of Meta’s efforts to strengthen online protections for younger users.

Meta AI Conversations Will Also Trigger Alerts

The parental notification system will also cover certain conversations teenagers have with Meta AI.

If a teenager discusses suicide or self-harm during interactions with Meta’s artificial intelligence assistant, the system may notify their supervising parents.

However, Meta has not specified the precise criteria that will determine when such conversations trigger an alert.

The company said notifications will not disclose the exact search terms entered by teenagers or reveal the details of their conversations with Meta AI.

Parents Encouraged to Talk to Their Children

Rather than sharing sensitive search histories or private AI conversations, Meta will encourage parents to communicate directly with their children about their wellbeing.

The notifications will also provide information about support resources and helplines that parents can consult if they are concerned about their child’s safety.

The approach is intended to balance parental awareness with teenagers’ privacy while helping families respond to potential mental health concerns.

Facebook Expands Teen Safety Measures

The introduction of parental alerts on Facebook follows the implementation of similar protections on Instagram.

Meta’s latest move extends its existing supervision tools to help parents recognise potential warning signs linked to harmful online searches and AI interactions.

However, the company has not publicly detailed the thresholds used to activate notifications, leaving questions about how frequently searches or conversations must occur before parents receive an alert.

The feature will apply to supervised teenage accounts, meaning parents who have not enabled Facebook’s supervision tools will not automatically receive these notifications.
