A Muslim vice principal and teacher-in-charge of Surendranath College in India’s West Bengal was allegedly confined for nearly a day and forced to sign a resignation letter by students affiliated with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), according to Indian media reports.

Mohammedi Taranum was reportedly surrounded by ABVP-linked students who confined her to her office for around 23 hours. The students allegedly arrived with a resignation letter and pressured her to sign it.

After Taranum left the room, the student group reportedly entered her office, lit incense sticks and sprinkled Ganga waterinside.

Taranum subsequently emailed senior authorities, stating that she had been pressured into signing the resignation letter.

According to the reports, the dispute between the students and the teacher was linked to attendance requirements. Law students are required to maintain at least 65% attendance to be eligible to sit for examinations, while a majority of the students reportedly did not meet the requirement.

The Higher Education Authority has yet to clarify whether Taranum’s resignation has been formally accepted.
