US President Donald Trump has said a decision on whether to pursue a deal with Iran or take further military action against the country is approaching, signalling that the current confrontation could reach a decisive point soon.

Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office DC, Trump said, “Maybe we’ll destroy Iran or make a deal, but the time to make a decision is getting close.”

He added that the matter would be resolved “one way or another” very soon, saying the war with Iran would also be won quickly.

Late Wednesday night, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio demanded that the Iranian delegation attending the United Nations General Assembly, including Iran’s foreign minister, immediately leave the United States after negotiations between Washington and Tehran stalled, Axios reported on Thursday.

The development underscored the sharp deterioration in relations between Washington and Tehran despite diplomatic efforts aimed at finding a way out of the escalating confrontation.

Meanwhile, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, addressing a gathering of military leaders at the Quantico Marine Base outside Washington, DC, claimed that US forces had destroyed Iran’s navy, air force, defence systems, leadership and military-industrial capabilities.

Hegseth credited US forces with crippling what he described as Iran’s “conventional defensive shield” and its nuclear ambitions.

The statements come amid heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran, with the United States maintaining military pressure on Iran while Trump continues to signal that a negotiated settlement remains an option.

Iran, meanwhile, has warned of retaliation against further attacks on its territory and critical infrastructure, as the confrontation raises wider concerns over regional security, maritime traffic and energy supplies through the Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz.

Trump’s latest remarks indicate that Washington is weighing both continued military action and a possible agreement with Tehran. However, the US president did not provide details about the terms of any potential deal or specify when a final decision would be announced.
