According to security sources, Afghan forces attempted to enter Pakistani territory and carry out what they described as an act of aggression, prompting a timely response from Pakistani security forces.
Pakistani security forces thwarted an attempted incursion from Afghanistan in the Gulistan sector along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, with several Afghan Taliban personnel killed in retaliatory action, security sources said.
According to security sources, Afghan forces attempted to enter Pakistani territory and carry out what they described as an act of aggression, prompting a timely response from Pakistani security forces.
The retaliatory action resulted in the deaths of several Afghan Taliban personnel, the sources said. The exact number of casualties was not immediately disclosed.
Intermittent exchanges of fire between Pakistani security forces and the Afghan Taliban were continuing in the border area, according to the sources.
Pakistani forces remain on high alert and are prepared to respond to any further incursion into the country’s territory from Afghan soil, they added.
Tensions Rise Along Pakistan-Afghanistan Border
The latest incident comes amid heightened tensions between Islamabad and Kabul following a series of security incidents along the border.
Earlier this week, Pakistani security sources said eight drones originating from areas under the control of the Afghan Taliban entered Pakistani airspace. According to the sources, Pakistan’s air defence system intercepted and destroyed all eight drones, including four in areas adjacent to the Torkham border.
Pakistan subsequently said it carried out aerial and drone strikes against what it described as terrorist hideouts and support infrastructure, including drone launching and storage sites, at 10 locations in areas under the control of the Afghan Taliban regime.
Pakistan’s Ministry of Information said the targets were linked to terrorist attacks inside Pakistan and to the attempted drone intrusion on September 23.
The developments followed earlier Pakistani strikes in Afghanistan’s Kunar and Paktika provinces. Islamabad said those operations targeted hideouts of terrorist groups blamed for attacks inside Pakistan, while Afghanistan protested the strikes and accused Pakistan of violating Afghan airspace and hitting civilian areas.
Islamabad has repeatedly called on the Afghan Taliban authorities to prevent Afghan territory from being used by terrorist groups for attacks against Pakistan. Kabul has rejected Pakistani allegations that it facilitates such groups.
The latest exchange in the Gulistan sector marks another escalation in an already tense security situation along the Pakistan-Afghanistan frontier.
