US Federal Agents Reportedly Raid Ilhan Omar’s Home in Immigration Fraud Probe
According to US media reports, agents from Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) conducted the search on Monday morning at Omar's residence in the suburbs of Washington, DC.
US federal agents have reportedly raided and searched the home of Democratic Congresswoman Ilhan Omar as part of a criminal investigation into alleged immigration-related document fraud.
According to US media reports, agents from Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) conducted the search on Monday morning at Omar’s residence in the suburbs of Washington, DC.
Omar, a Somali-born Muslim lawmaker, represents the US state of Minnesota in the House of Representatives.
The reported investigation concerns immigration documents completed by Omar’s father when she was a child. Her father has since passed away.
A spokesperson for the US Department of Justice told Fox News that federal agents conducted the search under a warrant obtained by the Justice Department and approved by a court.
According to the spokesperson, the operation was part of an ongoing investigation.
Omar, who wears a hijab, was first elected to the US Congress in 2018 at the age of 36, becoming one of the first two Muslim women elected to the US House of Representatives.
The Democratic congresswoman has frequently spoken out on issues including human rights violations, racial discrimination, Islamophobia, and the rights of Palestinians in Gaza and people in Indian-occupied Kashmir.
Omar has also repeatedly faced political attacks from US President Donald Trump.
Trump has previously described the Somali-American community as a threat to Minnesota.
In February, Trump said Omar should be admitted to a mental health institution and sent back to where she came from.
The reported federal search comes against the backdrop of longstanding political tensions between Omar and Trump, who has frequently criticised the Minnesota congresswoman.
