China, Iran Foreign Ministers Meet in Beijing as Araqchi Visits China
According to Iran’s official news agency IRNA, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei said, “Araghchi would discuss bilateral ties and key regional and international matters with his Chinese counterpart.”
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Iranian Foreign Minister Dr. Syed Abbas Araqchi met in Beijing on September 16, during Araqchi’s visit to China.
According to Iran’s official news agency IRNA, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei said, “Araghchi would discuss bilateral ties and key regional and international matters with his Chinese counterpart.”
The timing of Araqchi’s visit comes as major diplomatic activity is set to intensify in New York, where world leaders are travelling for the United Nations General Assembly. The General Debate for heads of state and government is scheduled to begin on September 22.
Against this backdrop, the Wang-Araqchi meeting provides an opportunity for Beijing and Tehran to discuss regional developments and Iran’s diplomatic position at a time when both China and the United States are preparing for high-level engagement.
The Xi-Trump meeting on September 24 will take place shortly after the opening of the UN General Debate, bringing the Chinese and US leaders together at a particularly active point in the international diplomatic calendar.
China maintains close political and economic ties with Iran and has previously supported diplomatic engagement to address regional disputes. Beijing also played a role in facilitating the 2023 restoration of diplomatic relations between Saudi Arabia and Iran.
