A Russian Tu-95 military aircraft crashed during a training flight in the country’s far eastern Amur region on Tuesday, killing six crew members and injuring another, according to Russia’s Defence Ministry.
The ministry said the aircraft went down in an uninhabited area on September 29 while conducting a training flight.
“According to preliminary data, six crew members died, while one was injured and evacuated to a medical facility,” the ministry said, according to Russia’s state-run TASS news agency.
The aircraft was not carrying ammunition at the time of the crash, the ministry added.
Unverified videos circulating on social media appeared to show flames and thick smoke rising from the reported crash site, with loud booming and crackling sounds audible in the background.
The Tu-95 is a Soviet-designed, long-range strategic bomber capable of carrying nuclear weapons. The aircraft remains in service with the Russian military and is regularly used in training exercises.
