Five defence officials have been arrested in Kazakhstan following the deaths of 14 military personnel during a naval training exercise on the Caspian Sea coast, according to foreign media reports.

First Deputy Navy Commander Among Those Arrested

Kazakhstan’s Interior Ministry said five Defence Ministry officials had been detained in connection with the incident, including the first deputy commander of the Navy.

Authorities said the officers were suspected of negligence and violations of navigation rules, while an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deaths remains underway.

Kazakhstan’s Navy has around 3,000 personnel and operates primarily in the Caspian Sea, where one of its key responsibilities is protecting the country’s strategically important offshore energy infrastructure.
